Hafnium oxidation at high temperature in steam

چکیده
To assess the potential impact of using hafnium as absorber material in LWRs high temperature accidental situations, oxidation behavior was studied up to 1400°C, i.e. at conditions relevant severe accidents. Different sample geometries were tested and oxidized steam/argon mixtures, either a furnace or thermogravimetric analyzer. Metallographic examinations, hydrogen measurements EPMA oxygen profiles then performed. For rods/discs, metallographic examinations showed presence dense protective oxide film after steam oxidation. No little detected metallic part rod/disc specimens. The reaction rate can be described by parabolic law range mid-to-long term, value effective activation energy determined from experimental data is good agreement with ones published literature. diffusion coefficient estimated each fitting profile obtained on rods its dependence derived 700-1400°C. claddings produced for application integral bundle tests exhibited lower resistance than rods/discs. non-protective layer significant amount picked claddings. Above 800°C, follows cubic quartic 800-1100°C. These highlighted influence surface steam. However, remains well below zirconium alloys same range.

The high temperature oxidation behaviour of Nimonic-115 industrial alloy has been investigated in presence of NaNO3, Na2CO3 and Na2O2 at 850oC in flowing air. The oxidation kinetics and effect of salt deposition for the period of 48 h were studied. The scale morphologies were determined on the basis of X-ray diffraction anal...

In his paper, Chandi C. Dey reports on the measurement of the nuclear quadrupole interaction of 181Hf(β−)181Ta in α-Hf metal with a few percent zirconium heated in air by perturbed angular correlation (PAC) of γ-rays. Since he did not observe the formation of HfO2 up to 773 K and during initial heating at 873 K for one day, he concluded that no oxygen is absorbed. The time dependent hyperfine i...

Ethanol oxidation rate in high pressure steam at the pressure of 10 MPa in the temperature ranging from 430 to 490 °C was studied with the fuel equivalence ratio of 0.4. On the assumption that the reaction order is first order, the reaction rate parameters obtained in the experiments are 10 ± 0.4 s for the pre-exponential factor and 166.5 ± 6.1 kJ·mol for the activation energy. This ethanol oxi...

An interesting change of scale sequence occurred during oxidation of nanocrystalline surface layer by means of a surface mechanical attrition treatment. The three-layer oxide structure from the surface towards the matrix is Fe3O4, spinel FeCr2O4 and corundum (Fe,Cr)2O3, which is different from the typical two-layer scale consisted of an Fe3O4 outer layer and an FeCr2O4 inner layer in convention...
